Allen & Thurber six shot double action bar hammer pepperbox, made 1840s-1850s. The famed Allen’s patent pepperbox pistols came in many sizes from diminutive pocket models to massive “dragoon” holster pistols. During this time, the percussion revolvers from Colt were still new, innovative arms that were at times in limited availability, were expensive and somewhat fragile. Pepperbox pistols with multi-barrels were less expensive and simpler mechanically than revolvers. They found great favor with the “California Gold Rushers,” also known as “49ers” as well as urban dwellers and those on both sides of the law. This engraved example is approximately .32 caliber and has 4” barrels. It sports correct smooth walnut grips and the bar hammer is stamped “ALLEN’S PATENT.” Function of these durable pistols was simple: The barrels were loaded as any muzzle loading arm of the time- usually with a patched round ball, percussion caps were placed on the nipples at the breech (the barrels could be easily removed for loading, capping or cleaning by simply unscrewing the large screw at the muzzle), and then the trigger was pulled to rotate the barrels, cock and release the hammer. These were very effective weapons at short range. This example shows some handling and use, but is mechanically sound and complete. Metal surfaces have aged to a soft gray patina with fine engraving. A wonderful relic from our early days as a nation! The pistol weighs 1lb 4oz. No Serial Number. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
