Featured in this lot are three American made lighters from two different companies circa 1940s-60s. The first and largest in this collection is from the Ronson Company and shows a sugar caster style. Louis V. Aronson established The Ronson Company in Newark, New Jersey, in 1886. The business initially produced a range of metal goods, such as pocket cigarette cases and the company didn't start making lighters until the 1900s. The Banjo lighter, introduced in 1913, was Ronson's first significant achievement. Under the direction of Louis' brother Max Aronson, the company's Art Metal Works division created well-known lighters like the Ronson Touch-Tip and Ronson De-Light. Ronson shifted its production to meet military demands during World War II. The business produced a range of items for the military, including lighters. During the war, American GIs began to frequently use the Ronson "Touch Tip" lighter. After the war, Ronson kept on innovating. In the 1950s, the dependable and user-friendly Ronson "Varaflame" butane lighter was released. A line of fashionable table lighters and pocket lighters was also released by Ronson. Ronson experienced a decline during the 1970s and 1980s as disposable lighters gained popularity. During this time, the company underwent a number of ownership changes, and lighter production in the US started to fall. The iconic windproof lighter manufacturer Zippo Manufacturing Company acquired Ronson in 2010 but the lighters were still made under the Ronson name. The lighter shows the main mechanisms on the top and center and can be pulled out to be refilled. The lighter is heavy and features a solid construction. The lighter produces a spark and keeps a solid flame. On the bottom of the gas container it reads, "Ronson Woodbridge, N. J. U.S.A.". The second lighter in this collection is also from the Ronson Company and is the Sport style. The lighter features gorgeous gold and silver plating with the gold plating showing images of a group of men on one side and a large ship on the opposite side, with intricately designed gold borders. The silver plating is intricately designed with stampings and hand tooling. The bottom of the lighter shows a spot for extra flint and a spot to refill the gas and reads, "Ronson Sport / Newark N.J. U.S.A. / U.S. Patent 2.481.195". The lighter produces a spark when activated but needs a refill on gas. The final and smallest lighter in this collection is from Surebet lighters and shows a full aluminum case construction. The lighter shows a small area where the top flicks up and exposes the wick. When struck the flint produces a small spark but does not the light the wick as there is no gas. The bottom of the lighter shows a spot to refill gas and is stamped "Surebet" on the bottom. All the lighters in this collection show good condition with no obvious signs of damage present. All the lighters produce a spark but only one produces a flame. The largest lighter measures a bottom diameter of 2 7/8" and a height of 4 5/8". The next lighter measures 9/16" L x 1 11/16" W x 2" H. The smallest measures 1/2" L x 1 1/4" W x 1 11/16" H. The collective weight of all three lighters is approximately 1 pound and 2 ounces.
