For your consideration is this rare 1895-1907 Rogers Iron Company battle axe tobacco cutter. In Springfield, Ohio, a business known as the Rogers Fence Company was established. The business specialized in fences made of decorative cast and wrought iron. The company's founder, Timothy Rogers, is not well-known. There are a few patents from the 1880s that belong to Rogers that deal with ornamental iron fencing, stairs, etc. He also held patents for a harrow and a lawnmower design. The name was changed to Rogers Iron Company in 1892, possibly to more accurately reflect a wider range of goods provided. The business was reorganized in 1905 and given a new name: William Bayley Company. This is a rare piece considering that once most of these cutters were worn out and broken, the axe was taken off and refurbished to be used as a hatchet. The cutter shows an oak wood handle and metal head on the axe. The metal has been painted blue, gold and yellow but only the blue coloring remains. The top of the axe head is attached to a long metal base where the tobacco would be placed and cut. The bottom shows the company's name reading, "The Rogers Iron Company, Springfield. O". The cutter shows good condition overall with wear present but no obvious signs of damage. Most of the original paint has been worn off except the blue coloring. The cutter measures 18 3/4" L x 2 7/8" W x 7 3/4" H and weighs 6 pounds and 2 ounces.
