For your consideration is an Antique French Book Collection, circa 1837-1880. Included are "Histoire de la Révolution Française" 1837, A. Thiers; "Dictionnaire Classique des Sciences Naturelles", 1842, M. Drapiez; and, "Les Quatre Heures de la Toilette Des Dames", 1880, M. de Favre. During the nineteenth century, France underwent significant transformations that reshaped its geography, demographics, language, and economic landscape, marking a period of profound change and development. The French Revolution and Napoleonic eras fundamentally altered French society, promoting centralization, administrative uniformity across departments (departments were created in 1790 as a rational replacement of Ancien Régime provinces with a view to strengthen national unity; the title "department" is used to mean a part of a larger whole), and a standardized legal code. Education also centralized, emphasizing technical training and meritocracy, despite growing conservatism among the aristocracy and the church. Cultural and artistic movements, from Romanticism to Modernism, mirrored these societal changes, contributing to France's rich cultural legacy. There was a departure from classicism, embracing Orientalism, tragic anti-heroes, wild landscapes, and themes from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Realist Movement came of age after 1848 and rejected what it considered the opulence and tackiness of the Romantic Movement. Realism was in a sense a revival of 18th-century Enlightenment ideas. It favored science and rationality and considered the Church an obstruction to human progress. The Modernism of the late 19th century, centered in Paris, was marked by artistic innovation across domains including music, dance, architecture, and literature. "Histoire de la Révolution Française", by Adolphe Thiers, provides a detailed and authoritative account of the French Revolution, one of the most significant political and social upheavals in European history. Thiers, who eventually became President of France, authored "Histoire de la Révolution Française", a detailed and dramatic chronicle of the events preceding and after the French Revolution (1789-1799). The book delves into the fall of the Ancien Régime, the rise of extreme political forces, the Reign of Terror, and the eventual ascension of Napoleon Bonaparte. "Dictionnaire Classique des Sciences Naturelles", by M. Drapiez provides definitions, analyses, and historical background for all living things under the three kingdoms of nature—animal, vegetable, and mineral. A significant scientific resource of its era, the study also examines applications in the fields of agriculture, medicine, the home economy, and the arts. Drapiez, a noted Belgian scientist, meticulously documented scientific discoveries and classifications, incorporating new findings from contemporary research. Lastly, "Les Quatre Heures de la Toilette des Dames" by De Favre explores erotic poetry in four songs with themes of feminine beauty, grooming, and allure in a poetic and artistic manner, characteristic of the Rococo period. The books are in good preserved condition, each book is gold gilt leather bound, slight scuffing observed on covers and edges. Intact pages display age tanning throughout and foxing.
