During the early 19th century, primers served to teach citizens and students the alphabet, reading, writing, arithmetic, but sometimes also to share uniform religious doctrine. McGuffey's Eclectic Readers were a series of graded primers for grade levels 1–6. They were widely used as textbooks in American schools from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. S. W. Clark developed the first complete diagramming system for English grammar. "Robinson's First Book in Arithmetic" by Daniel Fish is a fundamental guide designed to teach primary arithmetic through both oral and written exercises.
