Included in this lot is an Antique Montana Primitive Hand-Carved Sheep Brand, circa early 1900s. The thick-handled paint branding tool displays branding paint residue. Montana's sheep industry grew rapidly from the 1860s, driven by mining camp demand, resilience during harsh winters (unlike cattle), and immigrant herders, making it the nation's top wool producer by 1900; sheep were well-suited to Montana's landscape, outnumbering cattle by the century's turn, though conflicts over land arose with homesteaders. Experienced sheepherders, often immigrants, managed large flocks, sometimes living in wagons for months. Hand-carved tools like this one were used for marking sheep for ownership, often featuring initials or symbols. Brands such as this one were used as they do not damage the sheep's wool. The branding tool features a hole in the handle for a carrying/hanging strap (strap not included), is well preserved in good overall condition. Measures 4.25"W x 11.5"L x 3.5"D, weight is 1lb.
