Featured in this lot is this Antique Swiss Austrian Metal Oxen Cow Bell and Leather Strap, circa 19th century.
The tradition of hanging bells around cows’ necks dates back to the Middle Ages in Europe. Bells helped farmers locate their grazing cattle in the mountains and forests. In Switzerland, cowbell making developed into a specialized craft starting in the 18th century. Originally, cowbells were made of iron. Craftsmen there have passed down the tradition for generations and continue to handmake bells today using traditional techniques. The larger, more ornate bells are used for ceremonial purposes during cultural events like the spring/fall cow drives when dairy herds are moved between mountain pastures.
The cow bell features a wonderfully and professionally crafted cast iron construction that shows a worn nicely cared for harness leather strap with the bell giving a good sound to it.
The condition of this Swiss Austrian cow bell is good with some wear to the leather strap but otherwise the bell is in good overall condition. The measurements of this bell and strap is 26"L x 9"W, combined weight is 7lb, 4oz.
