This lot features an original buffalo parfleche rawhide stretched war drum from the Chief Powder Face Arapaho family circa late 19th Century. The piece is marked on the inside of the drum, “Made by Neal Powder Face Clinton, Okla." The piece shows a wetted and stretched buffalo / bison parfleche rawhide over a bent wood hoop having copper rivets holding the hoop together. The rawhide is secured to the sides with old iron square shank nails. The back shows four metal wires wrapped at the center with an early calico trade clothe. A photograph of Arapaho Chief, Powder Face, and family circa 1868 by William Stinson Soule for reference. Several images of Chief Powder Face are shown, not much is known about Powder Face.
