This is an unusual and rare ball head burl wood war club tomahawk with an early archaic age from an Native American Indian tribe. The only other similar example that has been documented can be shown in the attached pages from the book ‰ÛÏNative American Weapons‰Û by Colin F. Taylor on page 17. The page shows a burl ballhead war club with similar rich patina collected in 1838 by Bernandier from the now extinct Krankawa (Crank-a-wa) Indians of the Texas coast and is now on display in the Smithsonian Institution. The example offered in this sale was previously sold as a Northern Plains circa 1900 burl head war club, but after being purchased by a notable collector and being compared directly to the Krankawa Burl Ballhead club the piece has been reidentified as being of a substantially early age and most likely similar provenance as the Smithsonian piece. The club shows a root burl ball head with hand hewn long haft or shaft having a rich dark patina throughout. A close look at exposed areas of grain on the head shows a dark aged wood and truly excites for its early possibilities. Provenance: From the private museum collection of early Native American weapons and artifacts in Paris, France. The club measures 22 1/4" long, and 3 3/4" wide.
