Featured in this lot are Rare Albumen Picture Postcards of Presidential Testimonial Presentation to the Arikara, Gros Ventre, Mandan, and Sioux tribes, by B. L. Brigham, New Salem, N.D., 1924. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Gen. W. Irving Glover, third assistant postmaster general, as personal representative of President Calvin Coolidge, presented testimonials of their patriotism during the world war (WW1). Each tribe appointed "keepers of the testimonial" and they're seen in the photograph with General Glover standing in the middle, listed left to right:"Mato Ska", White Bear (Tom Frosted), Chief Sioux; "She-hek-hun" Sitting Crow, Head Chief Mandans; Gen. W. Irving Glover; "Nagapici", Foolish Bear, noted Scout, (Hidatsa) Gros Ventre; "Skanatu Nawinag", Charges Alone (Tom Rogers), (Sanish) Arikara, former Sergeant 18th Infantry, 1st Division A.E.F. Four of the photographs have attached typewritten lists of names of the tribal members in the respective photos. One photograph lists former old scouts for the U.S. from the Arikara. The photographs are in very good preserved condition for being over 100 years old, the albumen photographs measure 3.375"W x 5.375"L each.
