Featured in this lot is this gouache on paper called "Ancient Hunters," by Seminole/ Shawnee artist Benjamin Harjo Jr. born in 1945. This painting features a wonderfully and professionally crafted gouache on paper construction that shows a line of Native American figures sitting with fish in their lap with a unique headress and shows trade cloth garments. The artwork is marked "Ancient Hunters" in the bottom left hand corner and "Benjamin Harjo Jr. '89" in the bottom right hand corner. Benjamin Harjo, Jr. is half-Seminole and half-Shawnee in ancestry; he is enrolled in the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, which are his mother's people. Harjo typically paints geometric forms composed of blocks of highly saturated color that form both abstract and highly stylized representational figures. The mosaic nature of his painting is reminiscent of Seminole patchwork clothing. He also works in pen and ink, allowing his comic influences to show through. The condition of this gouache on paper is good with no obvious signs of damage to the artwork or the frame but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this framed gouache are 19" x 24" and the visible art measures 10 3/8" x 15 3/4".
