For your consideration is "Beyond the Mississippi by Albert Richardson, published in 1867. This book follows his account of a trip from Sacramento to Salt Lake that Richardson made that year at the invitation of CPRR President Leland Stanford to inspect the ongoing construction of the rail line. A new edition of his popular work appeared two years later in 1869 to which Richardson had added several new chapters including one on the planning, construction and importance to the nation of the then newly completed Pacific Railroad over which he had just traveled. The book measures 9" x 6.5" x 2".
