For your consideration is an Rare Original Antique Blackfoot Bay Mare and Otter Tipi Black/White Photograph, circa 1910s, framed. The bay mare horse is hitched to a tree limb tripod adjacent to a Blackfoot tipi which features the painted image of an otter as well as painted geometric symbols above and below. The Blackfeet Nation (Aamsskáápipikani, Pikuni), officially named the Blackfeet Tribe of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation of Montana, is a federally recognized tribe of Siksikaitsitapi people in northwest Montana. Notable photographers of the Blackfeet people were Edward Sheriff Curtis, Walter McClintock, Roland W. Reed, T. J. Hileman, Thomas Benjamin Magee. Tipi designs are the most notable, visible and can be a socially charged form of graphic art. Although many Plains Indians had painted designs on some of their tipis, the ones owned by Blackfoot people in Montana and Canada are most numerous. Many of those designs and their origin stories have been recorded in detail, the Blackfoot view them as representations of gifts and knowledge received from the spirit world and their culture heroes. Spirit beings depicted on a tipi speak of the structure of the Blackfoot universe. Animal spirits that bestow the power of a tipi to an individual are also well represented, including Thunderbird, otter, beaver, bison, elk, crow, snake and eagle. This photograph is in nice condition, the matted wood frame features a "weathered-style" stain and is in nice condition. Reverse wrap has "Bay Mare & Otter Tipi, Blackfoot" written by quill pen. Visible art measures 5.5"W x 8.5"L, frame is 10.5"W x 13.5"L x .75"D.
