This is a fabulous polished buffalo horn beaded headdress with long feather trailer from the Blackfoot Piegan of Northern Montana outside Glacier National Park from the mid-20th century. The piece shows polished Great American Bison Buffalo horns sewn with hide lacing on a tanned hide war bonnet cap consisting of five panels of tanned hide that are thread sewn. The front of the bonnet shows a beaded brow band on hide showing a geometric beadwork design with glass trade seed beads in colors of light blue, cobalt and white with a fancy beaded border. The top of the bonnet shows fancy red plume feathers in a bunch. The buffalo horns are tied together and is strung with antique wound glass trade beads in ligth blue and cobalt. The bonnet has eight fringes tied on with red wool stroud wrapped sections and long fur hide sections. The of the bonnet shows a row of feathers that flows into the long trailer which consists of dark blue wool stroud trade clothe with a fancy blue edge tied with many feathers which are wrapped in old red stroud wool trade clothe with plume feathers and fur spots with red dyed horse tail hair wispy hair strands. The back of the war bonnet headdress has a large tuft of angora wool or winter buffalo fur. There is some slight loss to the fabric and feathers. The piece displays beautifully and is a wonderful piece from the Northern Montana Blackfoot Reservation. Measures overall 73-inches long, horse are 16-inches wide.
