Featured in this lot is this brass INRI marked Catholic Church cross circa mid 1900s. The cross shows the crucifixion of Jesus and shows a tag at the top reading, "INRI". The letters INRI are initials for the Latin title that Pontius Pilate had written over the head of Jesus Christ on the cross. The words were "Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm", translating to, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews". Below Jesus is a skull and crossed bones representing death, which is subjected to Jesus on the cross. The symbol is prominent in Orthodox icons of the crucifixion, as well as older Roman Catholic icons. The back of the cross shows the Sacred Heart image. In Catholicism, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of Jesus's love for humanity and a sign of his divine and human love for his Father and for people. It's also a symbol of Jesus's interior life, which led him to be willing to sacrifice his life for people. The center of the piece shows a black colored resin inlay. There is a loop at the top center of the cross for connecting it to a chain or hanging it on the wall. The cross shows good condition overall with some slight wear present from its age and use over the years and a light patina, but no signs of major damage is noted. The cross measures 8 5/8" L x 3 1/2" W x 3/4" D and weighs 6 ounces.
