Featured in this lot is this small grouping of Navy Engineer Francis J. Lovering (Engineer of the US Ironclad Monitor USS Nahant) ephemera circa 1862-1863. Francis served in the Navy from 1857 to 1865. The photograph is oval in shape and is attached to a sheet of note paper that claims it was taken in 1862, that he was Chief Engineer of the USS Nahant, a Passaic class Monitor and that he collected the accompanying Paraguayan 1 real note in 1861. The Nahant saw extensive service during the War, including the Navy's first attack on Charleston Harbor and, most notably, the battle against the ram CSS Atlanta, in which the Nahant and her sister ship, the USS Weehawken, fought and defeated the Atlanta and three Confederate escort ships before capturing it the Atlanta. On the reverse of the note are two tickets for the 74th New York Regiment's steamboat excursion on July 4th, 1860. The note is attached to the bottom of the paper. All are packaged in an acid-free sleeve. Along with the money, tickets, photo and letter, is a small booklet titled, "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion". In the booklet, it includes reports from Francis J. Lovering talking about how to improve certain turrets and their functions. The pieces show good condiiton overall with some wear present from their age and handling over the years, but no signs of major damage or wear is noted. The photo is crudely cut out but shows good condition overall. The photo measures 2 1/8" L x 1 3/4" W, the bank note measures 4" L x 6 5/16" W, the letter measures 5 3/8" L x 8" W, the steamboat tickets measure 1 15/16" L x 3 1/4" W and the booklet measures 8 5/8" L x 5 1/2" W.
