For your consideration this lot includes a Bronze Gilded Feng Shui Guan Yu Statue, circa late Qing Dynasty. Guan Yu, courtesy name Yunchang, was a Chinese military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Along with Zhang Fei, he shared a brotherly relationship with Liu Bei and accompanied him on most of his early exploits. A well-known historical figure and folk hero, he became a semi-fictional character in classical Chinese literature, and was eventually deified as Guan Gong (?? Lord Guan). To this day, Chinese society reveres him as an upholder of good and defender of integrity, personifying loyalty, courage and righteousness. Here Guan Yu is standing on a plinth and wears a finely engraved armor with numerous weapons and heads of various mythical creatures. Open work bands of the garment and the headdress play around on all sides. The left hand is raised and holds the tips of the long beard, as his bent right arm has the hand in a position to hold a halberd. Guan Yu has defined facial features with long earlobes and a slight smile. The bronze figure is in nice condition with usual signs of wear, consistent with age. There is a small loss of material at the base, the left hand fingers, as well as other breakage here and there. The gilding has mostly faded, and the halberd is missing. Measurements 8.75"H x 4.5"W x 3.75"D, weight 5lbs approximate.*
