For your consideration is an Antique Buffalo Hanging Brass & Iron Spring Trapper Hide Scale. This old scale was used in the old trading posts to weigh animal hides. This is a very nice, authentic 1800's iron and brass "Buffalo Hide" Scale. It features a unique Spring “C” balance otherwise known as a European Mancur. This scale works like it should, weighing small hides on the shorter hook, and large and heavier weight hides on the longer hook. This piece was considered a lightweight, yet sturdy favorite with buffalo hunters, trappers and Mercantile owners or anyone else needing a compact scale to keep things honest. This iron scale has a crescent or half moon shaped unpolished brass dial with weight measurements on both sides. It has a hand forged, twisted split tip pointer that will allow for both sides of the dial to be read simultaneously. One side of the scale has measurement hash marks from zero to 50; the opposite has 20 to 400. Despite the visible rust, the scale is solidly built, functional. Measures 11"L at full length without hanging weight.
