For your consideration is this Rare First Edition, First Impression of "The Trail of the Sandhill Stag" by Ernest Seton-Thompson, 1899, the De Vinne Press, published by Charles Scribner's Sons New York City. Haynes Library Yellowstone National Park Wyoming with photograph image of Mount Haynes placard sticker is affixed to inside front cover. Colour frontis, seven plates (7) and fifty-two (52) line drawn & woodcut illustrations by the author in original decorated & blindstamped pebble linen. Naturalist and wildlife artist Ernest Thompson Seton was one of the founding pioneers of the Boy Scouts of America, particularly the appropriation and incorporation of what he believed to be Native American elements into the traditions of the BSA. A prolific writer and artist, several of his works have been adapted for television and film including the 1989 to 1990 Japanese Seton Animal Chronicles. Seton was an early pioneer of the modern school of animal fiction writing, his most popular work being Wild Animals I Have Known (1898), which contains the story of his killing of the wolf Lobo. He later became involved in a literary debate known as the nature fakers controversy, after John Burroughs published an article in 1903 in the Atlantic Monthly attacking writers of sentimental animal stories. The controversy lasted for four years and included important American environmental and political figures of the day, including President Theodore Roosevelt. This Green pebble linen cloth bound gold gilt book is in good overall condition, the front cover and spine have stamped gold gilt titling & edge trim design, rear cover has title and stag stamped, front cover has stamped gold gilt stag illustration. Slight spine edge tears at top and bottom, minimal scuffing noted to cover edges. Intact pages have gold gilt top edges, age tanning exhibited throughout. No other obvious marring noted, measures 6"W x 8"L x .5"D
