Featured in this lot is a framed collection of three Confederate States of America monetary bills from 1862-1864. The Confederate States of America dollar was first issued just before the outbreak of the American Civil War by the newly formed Confederacy. It was not backed by hard assets, but simply by a promise to pay the bearer after the war, on the prospect of Southern victory and independence. As the war began to tilt against the Confederates, confidence in the currency diminished and inflation followed. By the end of 1863, the Confederate dollar was quoted at just 6 cents in gold, and fell further still. The Greyback is now a prized collector's item, in its many versions, including those issued by individual states and local banks. The first bill in the frame is a $100 dollar bill from 1962 published by J. T. Paterson in Columbia, SC. The bill shows an engraving of a train with a steamship in the background set in the middle of the bill. In the lower left hand corner is the image of a milk-maid carrying the milk bucket. It has the hand-written ink date of issuance as June 29th 1862 and is numbered 14391. The bill shows good condition for its age with very slight wear. It measures 7 1/2" L x 3" W. The second bill in the frame, located in the middle, is $20 Confederate bill that was issued by the state of Georgia on April 6th, 1864, when the Yankees were in Northern Georgia getting ready for the campaign to capture Atlanta. The bill shows Moneta, a Roman Goddess of Memory, with the Treasurer and state arms in the center of the bill. The bill reads, "The State of Georgia will pay the bearer at her treasurer on the 25th day of December next, in Confederate Treasury notes issued after the first of April of 1864 if presented within three months after maturity, otherwise not redeemable except in payment of public dues." The bill is hand signed and numbered 20935. The bill shows good condition for its age with the top right corner being slightly torn and the bill showing light wear from its age. The $20 bill measures 6 1/2" L x 3" W. The last bill in this collection, located on the bottom, is a Confederate States of America $100 bill from 1884. This bill is from the last group of notes to be issued by the Confederate States during the Civil War. The bill shows a central vignette of Lucy Pickens, wife of Governor Francis Pickens of South Carolina in the middle of the bill, two Confederate soldiers in uniform holding their muskets in the lower left, and George W Randolph, a Virginia lawyer, planter, politician, Confederate general and former Confederate States Secretary of War in the bottom right hand corner. The top reads, "Richmond" and "February 17th, 1864". It is hand signed and numbered 63956. The bill shows good condition overall with slight wear from its age and no signs of damage. The bill measures 7 1/4" L x 3 1/8" W. The bills are set behind glass in a wood frame and are double matted. The frame measures 20" L x 13 1/4" W.*
