This is an original from-life period photograph of J.E.B. Stuart, C.S.A. General circa 1860’s during the American Civil War. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart (1833-1864) was a celebrated Confederate cavalry commander of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. This photograph exhibits General Jeb Stuarts wearing knee-high boots, gauntlet gloves, dress sash, while clutching his saber and ostrich plume adorned iconic hat. Stuart served under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. He fought at the Peninsula Campaign, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and was mortally wounded May 1864 at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, Virginia. This photograph is on a hard stock card, referred to as a “salt print” photograph by Heritage Auctions. Heritage sold a near identical photograph of Jeb Stuart for $2,000 (w/ bp) in June 2015 in poor faded condition with an irregularly trimmed edge (listed with a pre-sale estimate of $2,400-$3,600). Our example is well kept with a nice clear image, mounted to photographic board and protected in a plastic split. The back is marked in graphite pencil JEB Stuart CDV #461 and priced $1,250 (a price likely from circa early 2000’s). Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The piece (without the plastic slip) measures 3 7/8” by 2.5”. Plastic slip is 5 1/8” by 3”.
