This is quite possibly one of the finest Navajo Late Classic Serape Blankets dating to circa 1870 and is from the ex-collection of Sotheby’s New York 1980 and the John D. Rockefeller IV collection. The piece is a fine and tightly woven Navajo late classic serape blanket woven in a classic wavey line pattern with stepped design expressing negative diamonds. In colors of indigo blue, natural white, raveled green, raveled yellow on a raveled red field likely with some cochineal in fine, excellent condition. Provenance: Found to be an authentic Late Classic 1870 example by the experts at Sotheby’s, sold at Sotheby’s New York November 1980 Lot 225; From the collection of John D. Rockefeller IV & Shaon P. Rockefeller; Property from the Valley Ranch Jackson, Wyoming Residence of Laurance S. Rockefeller and John D. Rockefeller IV. The rug has been looked over by several experts and found to be one of the finest examples of a Late Classic they have seen in many years, a true heritage collector piece.
