This is a wonderful and large circa 1870-1880's Northern Cheyenne buffalo horn headdress war bonnet collected from the Fort Washakie Wind River from the Northern Cheyenne from an ex-East Coast Museum collection. The piece exhibits an Indian tanned buffalo bison fur cap with two polished buffalo horns, old trade clothe, old red stroud clothe selvedge, strips of braided black horse tail hair, strips of grey horse tail hair, a beautifully beaded brow band, long old stroud trade clothe selvedge trailer, old ermine hides and original beaded tie straps. The brow band is Indian tanned buffalo hide with a typical Northern Plains beadwork geometric design done in all 1800’s period glass trade seed beads showing red white hearts, greasy light blue, cobalt and chalk white. There are two drops of yellow dyed braided horse tail hair which are wrapped in Indian brain-tanned buckskin hide and covered in 1800’s-period correct glass trade seed beads with a banded design in cobalt, red white heart, and greasy light blue. There are old wound glass pony trade beads, frilly Indian hide fringes, and overall the piece shows a well kept condition with little to no bead loss but signs of patina and use. Provenance: Noted as being collected from the Fort Washakie Wind River Indian Reservation Northern Cheyenne from the ex-Museum East Coast collection where the piece was proudly on display.
