The lot features a nice circa 1870 Sioux beaded tobacco pouch / flat bag. The piece is made of Indian brain-tanned Buffalo hide and has classic geometric beadwork on both sides typical of other 19th Century Sioux pieces. The glass trade seed beads include colors of greasy yellow, light blue, red white heart, cobalt, chalk white, and greasy green. The bag has an old trade clothe piped border at the opening and the entire outside edge is finished with hand cut hide fringe. The top has the original hide tie strap and overall the pouch is in good condition showing signs of obvious age and use with little to no bead loss. Both sinew and trade thread swing is present. Provenance: Originally collected at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and from the ex-collection of Jim Bastian Kansas City, Missouri. Measures overall 5.25” by 4.75”.
