This is a stunning circa 1870 polychrome painted buffalo parfleche medicine large bag from the Sioux of the Northern Plains. The bag exhibits a thick Great American Bison Buffalo parfleche with a beautiful geometric mineral pigment polychrome painted design which extends along both sides and the top flap. The piece shows colors of green, red, yellow with a black outline. The top flap and outside edges are accented with thick Indian tanned Buffalo Bison hide fringes, which on the sides extend quite beautifully. The back has thick Buffalo Indian tanned ties. The bag is truly stunning and is well kept with some nice coloring.
