The lot features a porcupine and deer mineral pigment dyed hair roach from a Plains Native American Indian Warrior dating to circa 1880 from the Bruce VanLandingham Sundog collection. This 19th Century piece is constructed of porcupine quill, hair and deer hair with natural mineral pigment ocher red dyes in the traditional and iconic hair roach pattern. The authentic original shows a woven quill and hair base with round front tapering back to its point and having the hairs pluming out. The piece would have been worn one the head of a Native American Warrior into battle and can be seen in iconic works such as Karl Bodmer and George Catlin depicting early 1840- Indians. This example is well preserved with little to no damage and displays very well. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection.
