This is a unique set of moccasins that are handwritten in fountain pen with their history on the bottom including, “Arley (Arlee), Mt Nowell Wieva Presented by – No. 30 1882.” Showing a set of circa late-1870 to early-1880 Northern Plains Beaded Buffalo Hide child’s moccasins with hard sole bottoms from the collection of Bruce VanLandingham Sundog museum & gallery with the original tag still present. The bottoms are covered in fountain pen old handwriting telling the history of the set, which is mostly unable to be read. Arlee, Montana was named after the Salish leader Arlee. In October 1873, he moved a small group of his people from the Bitterroot Valley, which was designated a “conditional reservation” in the 1855 Hellgate Treaty, to the Jocko Agency (later Flathead Indian Agency) located a few miles south of the current town of Arlee. The town of Arlee and post office were established in 1855. Provenance: Marked on the bottom, “Arley (Arlee), Mt Nowell Wieva Presented by – No. 30, 1882…”; From the collection of Bruce VanLandingham Sundog gallery and museum Bozeman, Montana with the original tag which reads, “Cheyenne Child’s Moccasins c.1890-1900 $450 BV0659 Sundog Fine Art”. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. The set exhibits Indian tanned Great American Bison / Buffalo hide with Bison / Buffalo parfleche rawhide hard sole bottoms being completely sinew sewn. The set shows sinew sewn 1800’s old glass trade beads showing colors of greasy yellow and cobalt across the tops and wrapping around the foot. The set shows a pointed Indian tanned buffalo hide tongue with original ties and unique ankle. The bottoms show an old handwritten provenance history on the bottom. The set shows nice mostly supple hides with rich good patina, showing little to no bead loss and present very well. Each moccasins 6.5-inches long by 3.75-inches wide by 2.75-inches high.
