The lot features a 19th-century Assiniboine Buffalo Bison horn headband war bonnet headdress from the ex-Ken Canfield and Mike Kokin Sherwoods Spirit of America collections. The piece exhibits an Indian tanned buffalo bison hide with fur on sewn with Indian tanned hide lacing and shows two polished Buffalo Bison horns atop, secured with hide lacing and tied together with more hide lacing with red white heart wound glass 1800's glass trade bead accents. The Assiniboine were known for wearing a unique headband pattern of war bonnet or headdress the sat atop the head of the warrior, this being a nice representation of that. For reference see the Assiniboine horn headband in the McCord Museum collection (photo shown for reference); also see the Karl Bodmer "Noapeh-An Assiniboin 1840 artwork showing the warrior with headband horn bonnet (photo shown for reference). The buffalo hide has some stiffness to it and the buffalo hair is mostly present with very minimal loss. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Ken Canfield (1941-2006), a renowned Santa Fe, New Mexico dealer who established Canfield Gallery in the 1980’s; ex-collection Mark Kokin of Sherwoods Spirit of America Santa Fe, N.M. Measures 15-inches wide by 11-inches high approximately (about 12-inches wide from horn to horn).
