This is an exceptional Crow Apsaalooke Death Mask dating to circa 1890-1910’s collected from the Crow Reservation in Montana. The mask shows a paper mache plaster construction with early painted front in tans, black, browns, reds and blues. The mask was made from the face of an early Crow elder and said to have been handed down through the family over the years from the Crow Reservation in Montana. Provenance: The mask was examined by the three of the most prominent experts and collectors of American Indian antiquities in Montana and was found to be an authentic Crow Apsaalooke circa 1890-1910 example having a very rare high value. The mask has the same provenance and is from the same collection as the example offered in the North American Auction Co. November 2019 sale which sold for $2,460 (shown with bp). The mask shows holes at the eyes and nose with hide, wire and twine on the back. Measures 9 7/8”L by 7.5”W by 4.25”D. Well preserved condition with nice original paint.
