Featured in this lot is this vintage oak barrister cabinet called The Viking made by Skandia Furniture Co. from 1910-1920s. Skandia Furniture Company was established in 1889, and their factory was 2 blocks long. They specialized in dining room furniture and library furniture. The barrister bookcase was born out of necessity. Barristers, or lawyers that specialize in case law and represent clients in court, found themselves in need of a piece of furniture that could not only store volumes of reference books but also could be transported safely and easily as they traveled from court to court. This barrister features four hinged glass doors that open upwards. Each piece is secure but can easily be taken off to add or subtract sections or for easy transportation. In each sectional unit it features the Skandia Furniture Co. sticker with the name of the barrister model, The Viking, as well as patent dates and measurements for adding new sections. Overall the cabinet is in good condition for its vintage age and shows little wear and no signs of damage. The cabinet measures 10 3/8" L x 34 3/8" W x 61" H. The sectional cabinets measure 11 1/2" H.
