This is an outstanding, and incredibly rare original photograph of Chief Bacon Rind of the Osage and Pawnee Bill circa 1925. The image shows Pawnee Bill and Chief Bacon Rind side by side in both of their traditional regalia; Pawnee Bill with his large cowboy hat, beaded scout jacket, beaded gauntlet gloves and Chief Bacon Rind with his Osage Turban Plume Feather Headdress likely otter fur, with Plains silver hoop earrings, trade silver necklace, trade silver Plains Star silver gorget and more. The back of the image is marked in graphite pencil as such, “Bacon Rind Chief of the Osage Richest nation of people in the world. Maj. G..W. Lillie “Pawnee Bill” White Chief of the Pawnees and last living leader of the original old boomers. Taken at Indian Convention held at Ponca City Olda neay 18-24-25 E leaders? Pawnee, Oklahoma” and stamped Trompetter Studio Ponca City, Okla. 213 ½ East Grand.” Truly a rare image, possibly the only of its kind in the public market. The only other example of this photo that we identified was in the Gilcrease Museum Collection noted as Accession No. 4327.4327a-b date 1850-1900. Bacon Rind (1860-1932) was an Osage Chief formally name being Wah-she-hah, Star-That-Travels. Gordon William Lillie (1860-1942) known as Pawnee Bill was an American showman and performer who specialized in Wild West shows and was best known for his partnership with William “Buffalo” Bill Cody. The photograph is well kept, with some small folds, a small tear at the top, but overall, well kept with a clear, historic large format image. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The image measures 7” by 5.25”.
