Presented in this lot are two (2) Classic Santo Domingo (Kewa) Polychrome Jars, Black on Cream, circa 1930-1950. The floral design with birds exemplifies Santo Domingo artistry from this ceramic period. The jar is traditionally-made, and pit-fired. The form is also traditional, which has been miniaturized here for easy transport for the tourist trade. Santo Domingo Pottery and the Santo Domingo Pueblo, is one of the best-known tribes of the southwest Indians, largely because of their skill in marketing their pottery, jewelry, and other crafts. The Pueblo is fifth in population of the nineteen New Mexico Pueblos and is generally considered the most conservative in terms of customs and culture. As would be expected the pottery of Santo Domingo is strictly traditional, reproducing with care, the ancient forms, and decorations. In the four-corners region of the US, nineteen pueblos and villages have historically produced pottery. Although each of these pueblos use similar traditional methods of coiling, shaping, finishing and firing, the pottery from each is distinctive. Painted designs vary from pueblo to pueblo, yet share an ancient iconography based on abstract representations of clouds, rain, feathers, birds, plants, animals and other natural world features. These two Santo Domingo (Kewa) jars are in very nice condition, a consistent patina is noted throughout each piece, no obvious marring is noted. Largest jar measures 4"H x 3.75"W x 2.5"D; smallest is 3"W x 4"H
