Featured in this lot is this C.S. Fly cabinet card "Rifle Drill: Fort Huachuca circa 1886; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. Fort Huachuca is a United States Army installation, established on 3 March 1877 as Camp Huachuca. The garrison is under the command of the United States Army Installation Management Command. It is in Cochise County in southeast Arizona, approximately 15 miles north of the border with Mexico and at the northern end of the Huachuca Mountains, adjacent to the town of Sierra Vista. General Nelson A. Miles commanded Fort Huachuca as his headquarters in his campaign against Geronimo in 1886. After the surrender of Geronimo in 1886, the Apache threat was extinguished, but the army continued to operate Fort Huachuca because of its strategic border position. This cabinet card features a classic firing line with troopers aiming their rifles and cycling round down range in preparation of open conflict with Native resistance. The cabinet card is marked on the back as follows: Fly's Gallery - Tombstone, Ariz. - C.S. Fly Proprietor. The cabinet card also comes with an original museum tag that reads as follows: Fly Photo of Rifle Practice at Fort Huachuca. Camillus "Buck" Sydney Fly (May 2, 1849 – October 12, 1901) was an Old West photographer who is regarded by some as an early photojournalist and who captured the only known images of Native Americans while they were still at war with the United States. He took many other pictures of life in the silver-mining boom town of Tombstone, Arizona, and the surrounding region. He recognized the value of his photographs to illustrate periodicals of the day and took his camera to the scenes of important events where he recorded them and resold pictures to editors nationwide. The condition of this C.S. Fly cabinet card is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage with some slight browning to the cabinet card but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this Imperial cabinet card is 5" x 8". P-37
