For your consideration is this pre-prohibition beer barrel from C & J Brewing Company c. 1890-1900s. The C. & J. Michel Brewing Company, founded in 1857 by brothers Charles and John Michel, was a significant brewery in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Originally known as Charles & John Michel, La Crosse Brewery, the company was rebranded in 1882 as the C. & J. Michel Brewing Company. By 1889, the brewery's buildings had expanded to over five acres, indicating its significant expansion and importance in the region. Following the lifting of Prohibition in 1933, the company resumed operations as La Crosse Breweries, Inc., and continued production until 1956. Throughout its history, the C. & J. Michel Brewing Company has played an important part in establishing La Crosse as a major beer production hub in Wisconsin, adding to the city's rich brewing tradition. This original beer barrel is stamped on the top and bottom reading, "C & J Michel BR'G Co. Lacrosse, Wis.". It has its orginal wood slats and metal rings. It shows good to fair condition as wear is present from its age and use over the years. It measures a height of 16" and 12 1/2" W.
