This is a fabulous set of Assiniboine fully beaded high top large men's moccasins dating to circa 1940-1950's from ex-Allard Auction, ex-Eastern Montana Museum collection and Wyoming collection. The set is comprised of thick Indian tanned buffalo / bison hide with thick hard buffalo / bison hide soles. The moccasins and high tops are one piece, completely made together. The entire moccasins and leggings are covered in sinew sewn old glass trade seed beads in an amazing whimsical finely detailed flat beaded geometric design, typical of other fine Assiniboine pieces. The beadwork shows a pattern of Maltese crosses in a diamond pattern, “H” like railroad track patterns, tab designs, banded designs, triangular patterns and a bifurcated forked pattern. The beadwork shows a greasy blue background with pattern in greasy yellow, cobalt, greasy green and semi-transparent red. The leggings have the original Indian tanned buffalo hide ties and show a band running vertically of solid brass trade tacks. These are also very large moccasins and are likely one of the finest detailed sets of Assiniboine moccasins on the market. Noted as being collected from Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Reservation. Fort Peck was associated with Col. Campbell K. Peck, the partner of Elias H. Durfee from a trading firm of Durfee and Peck and in 1867 Abe Farwell constructed Fort Peck Trading Post along the Missouri River which created a monopoly in trade with the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes. Fort Peck served as the Indian Agency from 1873-1878, later being moved to Popular, Montana. Provenance: From the ex-Allard Auction with tag, ex-Eastern Montana Museum collection and a private Native American beadwork collection in Jackson, Wyoming. Each measures approx.. 17-inches high, 10.5-inches long along the sole by 7-inches wide at the top.
