This is a fabulous circa 1850-1860 Lakota Sioux pipe bag which shows quillwork along both the body of the bag and the fringes, a rare feature from the ex-collection of Nick and Donna Norman Colorado. Along with the porcupine quill quillwork the bag shows period early glass trade seed bead beadwork along the opening and above the fringes. The quillwork is predominantly in red, an early Lakota Sioux feature such as the Lakota Sioux Pipe Bag attributed to Rain in the Face sold by Bonhams Skinner.
The pipe bag is sinew sewn and shows natural pigment dyes on the quilwork. The beadwork shows greasy yellow, cobalt, sky blue and red white hearts. The quillwork shows a cross (Maltese Cross) and tab or box design in colors of red, yellow, purple and blue.
Provenance: From the ex-collection of Nick and Donna Norman Colorado and a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses. Measures overall 39" x 4 3/4" measruements with fringe.
