The lot features a stunning, circa 1850-1860 Sioux Plains root burl ball head war club with S-Curve, collected at New Ulm, Minnesota after the Sioux Revolt in 1862 from the ex-collection of Joe Kinker, Bruce VanLandingham and Jeb Taylor. The war club has a unique and highly artistic “S” curve ball head pattern with median beveled ridge running down the club. Below the gripping area is a prominent end with smooth Bear Head effigy with blade like design having the median ridge bevel running down the center again. There are hand drilled holes at the top and bottom of the ball, at the middle and bottom of the club. The club is carved from one piece and shows a root burl ball. The club has nice wear and patina with obvious signs of use having deep patina with a shiny exterior. The center of the club shows a row of tacks on both sides which are 19th-century solid brass square shank trade tacks with a nice mellow coloring. Provenance: From the ex-collections of Joe Kinker and Elaine Kinker (ATADA former members), Bruce VanLandingham, and Jeb Taylor; collected in New Ulm, Minnesota after the Sioux Revolt in 1862. This is truly a well kept, absolutely beautiful and historic ball head war club. Similar in the S-Curve as the Eastern Woodlands S-Curve club 1780-1800 sold by our company in 2018 for $8,400 (w/ bp). Measures overall 17 5/8-inches long, just the ball itself is 2 5/8-inches by 2 5/8-inches by 2.25-inches.
