Featured in this lot is this original Tombstone, Arizona Territory jailhouse cell door key ring circa 1870's to 1880's and was displayed in the Tombstone Western heritage Museum; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The key ring features a wonderfully and professionally forged set of cell door keys with different design so presumably for different locking mechanisms with a total of four keys on it and comes with an original museum tag that reads as follows: Original Jail house key from Tombstone Jail. The Tombstone Jail in the 19th century was a small but essential part of the town’s law enforcement system during its rowdy boomtown years. Located behind the courthouse on Toughnut Street, the jail was a crude, adobe and wood structure used to detain outlaws, drunks, and troublemakers caught in the lawless chaos of the silver rush era. Notable figures, including members of the Cowboys and other desperadoes, were briefly held there pending trial or transport. Escapes were not uncommon due to the jail’s primitive design, and it served more as a holding pen than a long-term facility. Its proximity to the courthouse and the site of high-profile trials made it a witness to some of the most turbulent moments in Tombstone’s storied history. The condition of this set of Tombstone Jail keys is well preserved with some oxidation to the keys consistent with age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of this collection of keys is 10 3/8" x 4 1/2" x 2 1/2". The collective weight of this set of keys is 1lb 6oz. LO201
