This is an outstanding, authentic circa 1870-1880 Blackfoot / Blackfeet stuffed weasel beaded medicine piece with paperwork from Mystic Warriors of Bruce and Ilene Johnson and from the collection of Stephen Johnston. The piece comes with a written and typed paperwork from Mystic Warriors from 2013 referred to as “Blackfoot Weasel Medicine, circa 1870-1880” which sold for $3,100 (in 2013). The piece exhibits a weasel hide which has been stuffed with old hair or wool (can be seen at the end) and sewn closed with sinew. The tail, ears, facial features including the nose are still partially intact and visible. At the center of the body is a wrapping of trade muslin canvas band which is covered in 19th Century period correct glass trade seed beads in a classic Blackfoot geometric pattern with colors of cobalt, chalk white and greasy yellow, all trade thread sewn with very slight bead loss. Medicine bags, or medicine bundles are increasingly scarce with this being an absolute beautiful example. Provenance: From the Stephen Johnston collection formerly from Darby, Montana and Foster City, CA; purchased in 2013 by Stephen Johnston from Bruce and Ilene Johnson Mystic Warriors Evergreen, Colorado with two printed copies of the receipts which show the piece as being marked Blackfoot Weasel Medicine circa 1870-1880 and sold for $3,100. For example of beaded medicine weasel pieces from the Blackfoot Piegan pieces see the 19th Century Blackfoot weasel medicine bundle from the William Ockelford Oldman collection in the British Museum collection. Measures 21”L by approximately 3.25”W by 2.75”D. The hide has some loss to the fur, some cracking, stiffness, slight loss or crack on the tail, but mostly intact and well preserved for its about 150 year old age. Copies of the paperwork are included.
