Featured in this lot is this Montana Gros Ventre beaded medicine bag circa 1870. The medicine bag features a wonderfully and professionally crafted hardened leather and trade seed bead construction that shows a blue maltise cross beaded in the center with a white beaded field and shows a hardened leather frame with a flap to the top and the beads are strung on sinew strands. The trade seed beads show coloration of chalk white, sky blue, light brown, pink, light pink, and green. Gros Ventre People are also known as People of the Waterfalls or Waterfalls People. They are the Saulteaux of Montana. They originally lived along the Great Falls of the Missouri River. They are also known as White Clay People or White Earth People. The condition of this Gros Ventre medicine bag is is well preserved with some wear and missing beads with a heavy patina to the hardened hide on the back and to the flap at the top but otherwise is well preserved for its age. The measurements of this medicine bag is 3 3/4" x 3 1/8" x 5/8". The collective weight of this medicine bag U6oz.
