This is a fabulous set of circa 1870 Crow Beaded Buffalo Hide Moccasins from an ex-Cowan's auction. The set were identified as 1870 Crow Beaded Buffalo Hide Moccasins by the experts at Cowan’s in 2012 and were a beautiful sale highlight. The set exhibits Indian tanned Great American Bison / Buffalo hide that are sinew sewn with a classic Apsáalooke Montana Crow beadwork design that is also sinew sewn in all 1800’s period correct glass trade seed beads. The bottom soles show thick parfleche rawhide buffalo bases with dark foot pattern wear. The beadwork shows colors of greasy yellow, cobalt (dark blue), red white heart, greasy light green (also known as pea green), amber and chalk white. There is little to no bead loss. Provenance: Found to be an authentic circa 1870 Crow Beaded Buffalo Hide Moccasins example by the experts at Cowan’s Auctions and sold in their American Indian Art October, 5, 2012 auction for $1,800; from a private collection of fine Native American antiquities from Paris, France. The set is well kept with mostly supple top hide, absent of any major damages and little to no bead loss. Each measures 10.5-inches along the sole by 4.25-inches wide by 3.75-inches high at the ankle.
