This is outstanding and terrific circa 1870 American Indian pipe tomahawk attributed to the Crow Indians in Colorado from the Dean Taylor Gallery and Ted Levy collections. This is truly an attractive, artful tomahawk with hand-blacksmith forged head. The head has a wide flaring western head with round eyelet hole and tall thin vase like bowl. The piece has a hickory wood haft handle that is adorned with old hot file brandings and brass trade tack designs. There is a wooden smoking tip and beautifully beaded buffalo / bison hide drop tied on to a pierced hole. The beadwork shows a classic Crow geometric pattern with period correct glass trade seed beads in colors of red white hearts, chalk white, greasy yellow, cobalt and greasy green. This is quintessential example of a classic Western Plains Indian tomahawk of the Indian Wars era. The head has some oxidation and wear, the handle exhibits shiny patina and is truly an attractive piece. Provenance: From the Dean Taylor Gallery and Ted Levy Santa Rosa, California ex-collections. The head measures 10-inches in length by 4-1/2 inches wide across the bottom of the blade.
