Featured in this lot are Rare Albumen Cabinet Cards by Zalmon Gilbert (Z. Gilbert), circa 1873-1889, Mandan, North Dakota. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Gilbert (1841-1897) was known for the "cabinet cards" and "carte de viste" photographs of Native Americans taken in his studio. Dependant on content and condition, today these snapshots of history routinely sell at ephemera auctions, sometimes from hundreds to thousand of dollars. One of the cabinet cards is of cattle being branded at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, the second card shows a covered wagon, the primary mode of transportation in the United States until the late 19th century. The third cabinet card features cowboys with horses, one of the cowboys is identified as "Billy Badger". Captain W. C. Badger (Billy) was Quartermaster at Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory when Custer's 7th Cavalry was stationed there, and personally associated with Gen. Custer. Badger is mentioned as photographer and subject matter expert extensively throughout the Welch Dakota Papers by Col. A. B. Welch. Welch had joined with John Kleinschmidt in 1926 to have these photographs reproduced from steroptican slides. Along with the cabinet cards is an albumen photograph of Philomena Badger (Mrs. Huber), presumably Billy's daughter, dressed in traditional ceremonial dress and hairpipe bone breastplate while holding a tomahawk pipe, circa 1900-1909. Photograph appears to have been taken at the Frank Fiske studio at Fort Yates, North Dakota. Fiske was an early-20th-century photographer primarily active among the Lakota (Sioux) on Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North and South Dakota. The cabinet cards and albumen photograph are in nicely preserved condition, exhibit normal wear, cabinet cards have the "Gilbert Z Mandan, N. D." hallmark stamped on the front bottom, scuffing noted on edges. Photograph has residue on reverse from previous mounting. Cards measure 4.25"W x 6.5"L, photograph is 3.75"W x 5.75"L.
