Featured in this lot is this Blackfoot Indian burl turtle effigy coup stick circa 1880s. The coup stick features a wonderfully and professionally crafted burl wood construction that shows taxidermist glass eyes and carved mouth. This is very unique piece centered around the piece of burl wood's natural design with the turtle head shaped out of the knot at the end. Coup sticks were symbolic and ceremonial tools used by Native American warriors, particularly among the Plains tribes, such as the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Crow, to display acts of bravery and skill. The condition of this Blackfoot Coup Stick is well preserved for its age with some slight patina to the burl wood but otherwise shows no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this coup stick is 37 1/2" x 2 7/8" x 1 1/4". The collective weight of this coup stick is 6oz.
