An exquisite circa 1880 Navajo First Phase Concho belt. The piece shows six large conchas (also referred to as conchos) with the correct oval shape, scalloped edge, stampings, domed shape, diamond cutouts at the center and around the outer edge pierced holes. These holes were pierced by an awl tool (see the photo of the back), an early feature, unlike other later examples that were drilled. Has a period 1880’s military pattern rectangular commercial buckle with a leather belt, commonly seen on other First Phase belts. Behind each concha is a conforming pad of leather. Provenance: From a prominent Northwestern high end collection of Native American antiquities. Belt measures overall 40 inches long. Each concha is approx. is 4 inches long by 3.25 inches high. The buckle is 1 ½ inches by 1 inch.
