This is a circa 1880's ornate brass bed from the Grand Hotel Fort Benton, Montana Territory from the ex-O'Dell and Kleinschmidt C.M. Russell collection. The Grand Hotel was built in 1882 at the height of the Upper Missouri steamboat era and opened as the finest luxury lodging between St. Louis and Seattle. Nicknamed the "Waldorf of the West" it is recognized today as Montana's oldest continuously operated hotel and a national historic landmark. The Grand Hotel was designed by architect Thomas Tweedy in the Victorian style. Built in 1881 out of local soft brick at a cost of $50,000, with an extra $150,000 spent on luxury furnishings, such as the bed offered in this lot. The bed is classic early Victorian circa 1880 example showing heavy solid brass with ornate flourishes, stippled finish and polished brass finishes with cast wrought iron accents and original casters.
