The lot features a Rainbow Hotel Great Falls, Montana circa 1911-1940’s china ceramic tobacco spittoon. The spittoon bears the iconic swooping “R” documented as the Rainbow Hotel in Great Falls, MT logo in a dark maroon color with an orange band. Built in 1911, the Rainbow Hotel was commissioned by the Great Falls Townsite Company, whose board included industrial titans John D. Ryan (president of the Anaconda Company) and James J. Hill (president of the Great Northern Railway). Designed by architects George Shanley and John Kent, it stood as one of Montana’s most lavish and expensive hotels, featuring a grand white marble lobby and its famous Palm Room. The top shows the Rainbow Hotel logo mark and the bottom is marked, “The Bailey-Walker Vitrified China / Supplied by Fargo Food Products Co., Fargo, N.D.” Fargo Food and Products as well as Bailey-Walker were both founded in the early 1900’s. The piece is from a multi-generational Montanan family from Great Falls and was part of the Catherine A. O’Dell collection and the John Kleinschmidt collection and O’Dell collection which much of the other pieces were on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Measures overall 7.5-inches in diameter across by 2.75-inches high.
