Featured in this lot is this Subpoena request letter circa 1884 from John Poe born in 1851 and died in 1923 Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The letter features a handwritten request to the standing recorder Bowman for unnamed subpoenas. John Poe was a lawman in Lincoln County and served under Pat Garrett and was present for the killing of Billy the Kid. In late 1882, Pat Garrett decided not to run for sheriff again, but rather than backing his deputy, John Poe, who was running, he instead backed a man named James Dolan, who had been one of the main perpetrators of the Lincoln County War. This would seemingly indicate that there was some friction between the two lawmen. In any event, Poe won the election and served as sheriff of Lincoln County until December 31, 1885. The condition of this John Poe correspondence is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage with some browning to the pages consistent with its age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of this letter is 9 7/8" x 7 3/4". LO153
