Presented in this lot is a Collection of Fort Abraham Lincoln and Mandan, Dakota Territory, 1888-1891. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Kleinschmidt's collection included vintage photographs taken by noted photographers such as David F. Barry, Frank Fiske, Stephen Fansler, Orlando Scott Goff, F. Jay Haynes as well as many others. The collection included photos of early reservation life in the Dakota Territory. The twenty-one photographs include scenes from Mandan including the historic Inter-Ocean Hotel which featured a noteworthy modern convenience for Dakota Territory hotels, an indoor plumbing system. Also included are photos of US Army soldiers and cavalry troopers on the parade grounds of Fort Lincoln. Lt. George Armstrong's 7th Cavalry was based at the fort. Lastly are photographs of Mandan Native Americans, The Mandan lived in the area prior to the fort's establishment. The photos are stamped on the reverse with the printer name, "Northwestern Foto Service Mandan, No. Dak. You Take 'Em We Make 'Em Master Photo Finishers Of America". Photographs are in good overall condition, carre' format, average measurement of each is 2.5"W x 3"L.
