This is an outstanding, historic and rare photograph showing the start of the Chadron-Chicago Cowboy Race to the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, June 12th, 1893, by photographer Foss & Eason Chadron, Nebraska. The large format photograph is marked in the negative, “Ready for the start Charon-Chicago Cowboy RACE June 13th, 1893, Photographed by Foss & Eason Chadron Neb.” The great 1,000-mile endurance race from Chadron, Nebraska to Chicago, Illinois is considered the undisputed “Great American Cowboy Race” that started June 13, 1893 with a field of nine riders, each with two horses. On the morning of June 27, 1893, the riders made it to Chicago and the “1,000 Mile Tree” at the site of the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, but the winning order was disputed. The racer was apparently the idea of Chadron jokester John G. Maher. Seven of the nine riders finished, with some traveling up to ninety miles a day. Nebraska badman “Doc” Middleton was an rider. John Berry won, riding Sandy and Poison, but was disqualified for having prior knowledge of the route. Chadron officials declared Joe Gillespie and Charlie Smith winners. Upon research of this race, and this image, none of the original photographs of the start, such as our example offered in this lot, are in the public market. The image is light and the large card has some loss to the edge. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 9 7/8” by 8”.
